This charming sculpture is Italian, late 19th century. It is fashioned from alabaster and is signed Pugi on the back.
 The child is depicted in the nude, but for a little drapery, his birdcage is open and he seems to be gazing into the distance, as though his eye is following the flight of his escaped charge.
