This beautiful classical sculpture represents Athena, the Greek goddess of War and the Martial Arts. It is a 19th copy "after the antique", of a Greek or Roman original. These were made to supply the demands of aristocratic collectors who did the Grand Tour by way of polishing off their education. They returned home with such sculptures as visible evidence of their new found sophistication.
This is a very good example; stately and strong but with delicate drapery and limbs so arranged as to imply great movement.
