This very large sculpture in spelter is an allagory of Science guiding Industry, shown with a cog and a hammer in one hand and riches, the reward for honest toil in the other. Science, the taller of the two figures is shown serene and classical, her drapery borrowed directly from the Caryatids of the Erection porch on the Acropolis. The figures are beautifully modeled and the casting is exceptional, as becomes the subject.
This piece is French, from the middle of the 19th century.
