This large and impressive desk is mahogany, and was made in England C.1890.
It is decorated with simple elegant cross-banding of satinwood and is strung with boxwood.
Beneath a galleried top and a run of small drawers the cylinder top raises and by mechanical means the writing surface slides forward at the same time.
Internally it offers a run of drawers and a facing of dummy drawers all beneath pigeon holes and a central shelf.
The tooled leather writing surface has two inkwells behind it.
The whole stands on two pedestals of four short drawers with a long drawer between.
