This sensational composition is in various types of alabaster.
It dates from C.1890-1910 and shows Cleopatra lounging lazily upon her sphinx. Her exotic costume, or perhaps the lack of it, combined with the stylization of her mount give this an unmistakable Art Deco air.
This sculpture actually has a light, the bulb being in the plinth, the middle layer of which is of pure translucent alabaster.
