Bronze Ewer

DSCI0503.JPG

This very decorative, though non-functional ewer was made in Italy in the 19th century. It is inspired by the designs of Giambattista Piranesi (1720-88). A classical wine jug has as its handle two naughty cherubs trying to reach the contents, a drapery swag across the width of the vessel leads the eye to a goats head on the front (an animal traditionally associated with Bacchus). The gadrooned underside descends to a central foot resting on a base of red Griotte marble.

Price: £650.
