Bronze and Alabaster Girl on an Elephant

DSCF4611.JPG

This wonderful sculpture is Italian and comes from the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century. The lady, languidly perched atop her elephant, is executed in alabaster, which has been partly highlighted with touches of colour. Her turban, sandals, jewellery and diaphanous costume speak of a romantic interpretation of the East, while the elephant is expertly modelled in bronze, a medium which is used here to perfectly reflect the rough textures and the solidity of her mount.
